WEEK 4

Name: California
Year of Admittance: 1850
Size: 423,970 km2
Population: 39,512,000
Largest City: Los Angeles
Capital: Sacramento

The US state of California is located on the west coast of the US. It is the most populated state and 3rd largest in size.  Originally part of Spain, it became part of Mexico in 1821 and then became part of the US, after Mexico lost the Mexican-American war.  California was a relatively rural and unpopulated state until the gold rush started in 1848.  This brought many people and very quickly large cities started to form.

Nowadays, California is known for its temperate climate, liberal views, health of its citizens, technology sector and of course, the movie and music industry.  Similar to Florida, California is near a Spanish-speaking country, so there are a large number of Spanish speakers and Latino immigrants.  Because California is such a large state; there are many differences between southern California, which is focused around LA; and Northern California, which is focused around San Francisco.  Many famous companies hail from California, these include, Levi Jeans, Apple, Ghirardelli Chocolate, Intel, Disney and my favorite, Taco Bell.  By the way, if you visit Tokyo or Osaka, I highly recommend Taco Bell. It’s an american fast food restaurant from California that specializes in Americanized Mexican food.  It’s absolutely delicious.
