The first place of this series is a place I have been to many times.  Mcdonald’s.  So what is the difference between Japanese Mcdonald’s and U.S. Mcdonalds?  Well in my opinion there are a few big differences.  One major one is the “campaign” food.  Mcdonald’s Japan will usually have a different lineup of burgers/drinks etc that change monthly or periodically.  For example the newest one is Chicken Tatsuta (which is amazing. Try the mentai cheese one).  U.S. Mcdonald’s don’t often have this type of campaign system.

One difference though is a regional difference.  With the U.S. being so large there are many different regions; sometimes which have their own regional specials. For example, Hawaii McDonald`s has spam for breakfast and rice.  Another example is the northeast, where some locations have a lobster roll, since seafood is such an integral part of the New England life.  A common misconception is that U.S. Mcdonald’s food size is bigger.  I don’t think this is true.  They are about the same and a calorie comparison of the nutritional information shows that both countries` food menu items have about the same amount of calories, so the sizes are similar or the same.  The only difference here is the drink sizes.  With U.S. sizes being bigger in general.

The best and biggest difference though is the presentation and service.  Oftentimes the food you get in Japan will look well put together and look like the picture on the menu.  The service is fast and friendly.  In the U.S. in my experience many times the food hastily put together and doesn’t really look like the picture on the menu.  Overall my advice, if you visit the states, check out Mcdonald`s there and compare the differences for yourself!  Either way, as an American and fast food aficionado, I`m lovin it!
