Name: Washington (State)
Year of Admittance: 1889
Size: 184,827 km2
Population: 7,615,000
Largest City: Seattle
Capital: Olympia

The 42nd state, Washington, is often referred to as Washington state to distinguish it from the nation’s capital city, Washington, D.C.; which is over 4,000 kilometers away.

Washington borders Canada to the north and Oregon to the south.  Over 60 percent of Washington’s residents live in the Seattle metropolitan area.  Washington has a mediterranean  climate which means dry summers and mild winters.  The area around the mountains however may have a different climate.  There are many active volcanoes in Washington.  The tallest mountain and volcano in the continental U.S., Mt. Rainier is located in Washington, it is 4,400 meters.  Washington is one of the wealthiest and most liberal states in the U.S and has the highest life expectancy.  Washington is famous for salmon, fish markets and apples.  Many internationally known companies hail from Washington, such as Starbucks, Windows and Amazon.  I recommend Pike’s Place market if you visit Seattle.  You can see the famous fish throwers, tossing large fish to each other.
