The US state of Lousiana is located in what is called the deep south part of the US.  It is unique in the sense that it is one of the only states to have a large French influence and no official language.  French is the 2nd most common spoken language in the state.  Many places in Louisana are also located below sea level so there is often a high risk for flooding, and major damage in the event of a hurricane or heavy rainfall; the climate is a very humid, subtropical climate.

Long before being settled by Europeans, Louisiana was inhabited by many Native American Indians.  There are many ancient Indian sites and reservations that can be visited.  There is one UNESCO world heritage site, Poverty Point.  Tourism is a big part of the Louisiana economy.  Tourists come from all over the world for the Mardi Gras festival in March in New Orleans.  Cajun food is very popular, spicy food is king here, Louisiana is also the birthplace of Tabasco.  You may already know one popular food from Louisiana; Jambalaya.  Gumbo, Shrimp, Grits, and various kinds of seafood are also very common.  Many different cultures, people, and food can be found in the neighborhood known as the French Quarter.
